- Before beginning this procedure, use the shade guide below to determine the current shade of your teeth. After you have completed this procedure, use the shade guide again to determine the improved whiteness in your smile.
- Depending on your habits, touch-up sessions may be necessary over time to maintain the level of whiteness you desire.
How to Use Your Whitening Gel
- Brush Your Teeth First: Brush and floss before each whitening session. This allows the gel to the surface of each tooth evenly.
- Apply the Whitening Gel to Your Retainers: In a dry retainer, place a small dot (2-3mm diameter) on the inside of each tooth well where it will touch the front of each tooth. Since your retainers are custom made for your teeth, you do not need a lot of gel to cover the entire front side of each tooth.
- Insert Your Retainers: Gently place your retainers on your teeth using your fingers. Do not bite your retainers in place. Once in place, push the front side of your retainer to smear the gel all over each tooth. Wipe away any excess gel that may have gotten on your gums.
- Whiten Your Teeth Overnight: The gel we use is intended to be used overnight for a period of eight to 10 hours to lessen the chance of experiencing any tooth sensitivity.
- Remove Your Retainers: In the morning remove your retainers, then brush your teeth and your retainers to remove any residual whitening gel.
What to Expect
You have received enough whitening gel to last you approximately two weeks of use. For best results, use the gel consistently until the desired results have been achieved.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Dental restorations (such as crowns, veneers and fillings) will not whiten. If you would like a tooth-colored filling to be whiter, please consult your general dentist after you have completed your whitening procedure.
- Some patients experience some mild tooth sensitivity. This will subside over time. Sensitivity more than mild should be addressed by attempting to whiten every other night. Some patients find it helpful to use Sensodyne toothpaste in their retainers on the nights between their whitening sessions.
- White spots on teeth from not brushing well will whiten along with healthy tooth enamel, making the white spots more pronounced. If you would like to reduce the appearance of white spots, please consult with your general dentist.
- Avoid staining foods and drinks (coffee, tea, dark soda, red wine, berries, tobacco, etc.) for the first 24-28 hours after this whitening procedure because your teeth are more porous to stains.
